I signed a 24 month contract with MTN. Two months before expiry date I went to 3 MTN agents asking them to submit my cancellation request in advance. They told me this cannot be done. I insisted on putting my request on paper at one agent. I also sent notice of cancellation by e-mail to the address supplied on my monthly invoice. I followed this up with a second e-mail. Not receiving any reply, I forwarded these e-mails to MTN Client Service. Needless to say, I never received any replies.
On expiry I went to MTN Service Centre in George to confirm that the 24 month contract has been cancelled. To my surprise they said it is not possible to cancel; I should have given MTN notice in advance!! What does a 24 month contract means if it does not expire on the agreed date? Why did three agents told me I could not give notice in advance? The next surprise was that a penalty is payable should I cancel the contract! None of this was explained to me when I signed for the 24 month contract. To add to my frustration, I was informed that during the extended period (following the 24 months contract period), I will have to pay a higher fee for their service!
