In 2008 I started getting phone calls and emails from Munnik Basson Dagama Inc lawyers in Johannesburg, stating that MTN has handed me over for funds I owed them.
Turned out that MTN re-allocated the number I had with them, to another gentleman, who disappeared without paying and they couldn't trace him. Clearly I was the easy target and because I had no proof to fax them, I was liable for the outstanding amount, which increased every month due to penalties.
In order to make this go away and maintain my scrupulous credit record, I paid the money and received a letter dated 3 April 2008, stating that I have settled the account in full.
I was bitter, but believed that was the end of it.
The following year (2009) I took out another contract with MTN. It was immediately approved without a problem.
Last year they had a very good special and because I had an existing contract with them and it was about to expire, I applied for the new deal. It was declined! Turns out that there is an entry on the system that I was handed over to the lawyers. Amount outstanding zero, but they now refuse to give me another contract.
