Debiting instalment after cancellation

I cancelled my Gym Membership in July 2013 due to the fact that I no longer had the time to go to Gym and I needed the money for other expenses. After I cancelled, Virgin Active called me to say that I would receive 4 months free membership and thereafter I would be contacted to see if I would still like to cancel my membership or if I am able to pay for the membership and have the time to go to gym. the 4 months past and I didn't get to go to gym in that time but all of a sudden a full membership fee was deducted from account in November and December and now again on 1 February 2014.what give Virgin Active the right to deduct money from my account without my authorization or even so much as calling me to confirm that I can afford it and would actually like to continue my membership. I tried contacting Virgin Active directly but they refuse to refund me for November and December. they say they will refund me for January but that amount has already been debited from my account and not yet reversed. Clearly when people are not able to keep their membership you offer them free membership for 4 months and then you secretly start debiting their account again hoping that they wont notice
