Make contracts sound better than they really are

I joined the gym end of April 2012 as a student. The representative who helped me assured me that the contract is month-to-month and I am not bound for a year. Now on the 30 January 2013 I cancelled my contract due to unforseen circumstances. They told me no I signed a fixed contract for a year and I need to pay a cancellation fee. So I paid the cancellation fee and was assured I would not have to pay the installment then for February 2013. Then on Firday the 1st of February they still took the installement by debit order. I phoned the gym on Saturday and they said they will get back to me today (Monday). They never got back to me and so I phoned them at around 11am. The lady told me the reason they debited my account still, is due to the fact that the debit orders get sent a week in advance to the bank. I understood everything, but now I am told I would not get a full refund, I have to pay AGAIN. The cancellation fee I already paid was not enough, so the lady that helped me on Wednesday made a mistake. I am a student and I can't just keep paying, because of their employees mistakes. I feel mislead and will think twice before I ever join the gym again.
