Taking Money After Contract Has Expired

When I signed a one year contract at the gym and when I relocated 10 months later, I didn't mind finishing off the contract since I still worked in the area. After the 12 month period had ended I assumed that the membership was over, since I didn't receive any communication from the gym. The following month (13th month), they debited again, this time more than usual, but I was not surprised since I had missed a payment earlier in the year. When I logged onto internet banking today, I see that they haven't stopped debiting my account for that.

When I called the branch, all I was told is that someone was supposed to call me to notify me that my contract would be converted to a month-to-month contract for another year until I cancel it. That is unacceptable, since I now find out I have been billed for 3 months that I have never used, worst of all at a higher rate (normal monthly 10%). Their lack of communication in all matters is disgusting as I can see, they do not care as long as money enters their account. I have now been told that to cancel, I still have to pay that month I had missed since they have just gone about business as usual (which turns out its )!
