I was at Pick 'n Pay at The Workshop in Durban this morning to buy some things. At the till I realised that I did not have enough money for that purchase and took out my FNB business card to make the payment.
Without swiping my card or sticking it into the terminal he just told me the card is not working. He called a Coloured lady supervisor over and told her in Zulu that the card is not working. She came closer and looked at the card. Then she looked at me & asked me if I am Mr. Van Wyk. I answered in the affirmative and she just walked away. I was baffled but it quickly dawned on me that the cashier did not believe I could be the owner of the card. He refused to assist me any further. As a businessman who like to optimise how I spend my time I quickly whipped out the other cash I had and paid.
I believe the cashier is under instructions and PnP is therefore to blame for this stereotyping. Most of their employees are not that educated and are just following what they are taught. This was both offensive and insulting to me as a regular shopper. I am not sure what to make of it. I am in shock as my INDIAN wife have used my card at PnP many times before.
