No clear indication of expiry dates

On 4th November I went in to purchase an item with a gift card and I was told the card had no information on it, it has expired. My husband requested that they query it and he was told that they will be in contact with him. On 6th November I received a call stating that they were no closer to an answer and was awaiting their area manger. On 25th November I went into the store requesting feedback as I haven't heard from them since the 6th. I was told that they had tried to phone me but it went to voice mail. They even told me that they didn't leave a message and that their area manager said I must read the back of the card for the terms and conditions. The card expires after 3 years. I received the gift card on the 28th November 2010 as a gift, to my knowledge it was within the 3 years as there is no expiry date on the card I don't know when the card was bought. I still don't have an answer even after logging a complaint on their website. The automated response from their website says that if no-one contacts me within 2 working days to contact them. I feel that I have run after them enough and this whole thing is costing me more than the R300 that was on the card.
