We all know what happened this weekend in the Helderberg. Disaster Management had their hands full and couldn't supply enough bodies. So Somerset West Neighbourhood watch together with Vetus Schola worked for hours to organise evacuations etc. One of the officers - 'just call me Blikkies' - finished his regular 12 or more hours shift and stopped at the base for some well-earned refreshments on his way home. He assessed the situation at the church and realised that, even though things were fairly well organised, no-one was really taking charge and co-ordinating the distributions of the donations. He quietly took matters into his hands - even though he was cold, tired and wet and off duty- and co-ordinated everything. He left with the rest of us just after midnight 6 hours after he was supposed to go home. He was back on the job early the next morning.
