Company's new software upgrade means I pay!

ADT has apparently decided to upgrade their software/systems, and all of a sudden, after a technician has been to my premises, I was told that the reason my alarm keeps phoning the control room when I arm it, is due to the fact that I have a 20 year old "panel" that now does not "communicate" properly with the new system!

Why is it that when ADT upgrades, I HAVE TO upgrade as well? It's going to cost me about R1000 to upgrade the "panel" in my house, and apparently this new fixture offers very little new to justify the financial outlay, besides adding more zones it can cover in the house. Should I decide not to upgrade, my alarm system will keep phoning the control room when I activate it at 50c per call, all for my account of course.
And now ADT is increasing their monthly fee as well, just to put the cherry on top. And in the meantime the burglaries continue in my street...
