Multichoice
MultiChoice should ask for proof of identification

I went to purchase DSTV (R599) - when I called in for them to set everything up the lady checked on the system and told me that first I need to pay an outstanding amount reconnection fee. I asked why - long story short it turned out that in 1999 someone in JHB used my ID number to open an account - they used another cell number and a JHB address.

Firstly I would have been 17 years old at the time, secondly I did not live in JHB and thirdly I have a vodacom cell phone number.

The lady said that unfortunately anyone can call in and set up an account - they do not ask for proof of id - just an id number. This is insane!!! How can they still be operating like this?

I said to her how come I have never been contacted about this - she said 'oh a statement was sent out in February 2012' (13 years later?!) so I said but to what address - she said it was sent to an address in Florida Gauteng.

NOW - in order for me to get my DSTV connected I have to make my way to their Umhlanga offices with my ID book so that they can 'write off' this amount. I am so irritated as it is not my fault they do not ask for proof of id. They should WILLINGLY just write this matter off & sort it out!!
