Pay for damage

I am a tenant at 50 Angus Court in Kempton Park, Kempton Road.
On Wednesday 27 Feb 2013, i was driving into my complex, opened the gate which is remote controlled and has sensors on it to sense anything that passes and will automatically stop. When i was driving in, the gate closed on me, damaged my car, the cost to fix the damage is about R2300.
I approached the Angus Court Body Coprorate Manager Alan Phillips, to tell them about the malfunction on their gate and the damage that it caused to my car, they told me that they are not responsible for the damage, i should pay for the damage.
