A friend of mine was recently admitted at Steve Biko Academic hospital. When we enquired where the showers are-they informed us that they only have showers for disabled patients (in ward 9) and also advised that they don't have hot water for patients to bathe in! The shower, by the way- I have a photo of this- has a rotting wet blanket in it- just laying on the floor. In the week that I visited by friend, no one came to clean the shower- the blanket just kept rotting away. They don't even have proper ventilation systems- the horrible smells just stays in the rooms! Hundreds of patients can't wash themselves (or they can, if you don't mind a bath in cold water in the dead of winter when you are critically ill). One of the patients that lay next to my friend told him that, even in the dead of winter, he had been in hospital for a week and no one ever offered him a blanket or a pillow. All he was given was a dirty sheet. To worsen things, my friend had to do his procedure three times after his original doctor disappeared and by day three he had six doctors and a procedure that should have taken one day, instead took five. Steve Biko staff- you should be ashamed!!
