I noticed a spike in my monthly statement, I was advised to check for a leak. There were 3 leaks on my property - 2 from the pipe not being installed correctly and one leak was directly on the water meter where the readings take place. I was told to get a plumber to come fix the issue and then submit the paid plumbers invoices along with a form that I had to complete for reimbursement. The staff at the municipality now say that they won't pay me back as originally stipulated. I have now sold the property and the new owners have moved in - yet the municipality refuse to close my account even though the new owners have opened their account and paid their deposits. I had been asking for a un updated statement for over 2 months so I could pay the amount owing but they said due to the statement being incorrect they had frozen the account until the leaks were fixed.
In the sale of the house the lawyers went to settle the account as is the norm. The municipality charged me R20, 000 for an account that they themselves say is incorrect and under review. I want my money back and the account closed ASAP.
