Media reports have revealed that BHP Billiton signed an agreement with Eskom in 1992 establishing the price they pay for electricity at 22.65c/kwh until 2028. While the legality of this contract may hold, BHP Billiton is surely under an ethical obligation to renegotiate the tariff they pay in light of the energy crisis in South Africa; in light of Eskom striving to build more plants; in light of their comparative industrial usage; in light of the sustainability of not only their operation but other commerce and trade in SA; and in light of general access and affordability towards the consumer and citizen of South Africa. Come on BHP Billiton, step up to the plate and be part of the solution and not a corporate institution which profits and pillages.
