Discovery Health
Discovery refuses to pay for Cornea Crosslinking!

I underwent a normal eye test and was advised by my optomotrist that she suspects that I might suffer from Kerataconus a disease of the cornea. I proceeded to consult with an eye specialist Dr. Charl Weitz whom confirmed that I do indeed suffer from Degenerative Kerataconus and that the leading procedure to undergo is Cornea Cross Linking. He furtehr advised that should I not undergo the procedure my eye will worsen and I will need to undergo a Corneal Transplant. He advised that contact lenses and glasses will not halter the degeneration of they Cornea. I attempted to obtain authorization from my medical aid Discovery Health and was advised they refuse to cover the cost of the procedure as there was not sufficient medical evidence that the procedure yield results. This is shocking to me as there are several medical articles referring to the procedure and the results that have been obtained. I am on Discovery Essential Comprehensive plan with unlimited hospital benefits, however I am not covered in this matter. I have been a member of discovery health either as a benificiary or main member since 1997/98 on the same plan and is brushed off very easily by this company.
