Spectramed
ONCOLOGY AUTHORISATION

I was diagnosed with liver cancer in late Aug. The treatment involved is "Therasphere treatment" and is relatively new in SA and the procedure is done @ the Donald Gordon Hospital as they specialise in liver treatments/transplants ect.
All documents were sent to medical aid on 20/09/13 for authorisation for oncology treatment. This is done via Spectrameds DSP which is One Health/Optipharm. We know that with liver cancer the quicker treatment is given the better your chance of survival. Not only is this stressfull for myself, but for my family as well. Every time we phone (my oncologist office and myself) we are told that the matter is with the "medical advisor" and that the treatment is expensive. Two weeks have passed and this morning I receive an email to say due to the cost of treatment this has been referred to their medical advisor. So what has happened for the last 2 weeks?
Are the medical aids now deciding who lives or dies because of cost saving? Clearly we are just a number to them.
