IPod - Poor quality!

My son worked hard, saved his money and purchased a brand new iPod from the Gateway Store in KZN. This is some two and a half years ago. He looked after this item like gold and hardly took it out. When it was at home he stored it in its original box. I mean he really looked after it!
Recently it just stopped working. He took it to the Apple store in Gateway and an Apple repair shop in Gateway who both informed him that the hard drive has gone and that he might as well replace the iPod with a new one because of the expense of repairing it!
I think this is shocking and a very poor reflection on the quality of Apple products. He spent over R2 500.00 on an item that really didn't get abused and it just stopped working!
The warranty has expired so there is just no recourse. Tough luck!
I will not be purchasing any further Apple products and would advise others of the same.
