Accident - no airbags deployed

Good morning,

My brother bought a new Kia not 2 months ago. Last week, one morning on his way to gym he was in an accident. A tree was in the road and he didn't see it soon enough.
My shock is that no airbags deployed. The bonnet went into the windshield and almost decapitated my brother. I was told by one of the salespeople at Kia Bryanston that the engine is suppose to drop out as a safety measure when confronted by such an impact. I did not see any safety measures as was discussed with me taking action to protect my brother.

I must say I am disappointed in the safety of the car. I was looking at purchasing a new Kia as a family car but now I believe the risk is too big.
