The air conditioner on our X-Trail simply stopped working about 100 km outside of George on our way to Knysna on the 23rd of December. Not suspecting too much of a problem we booked the car into Nissan Knysna but after 5 hours of tinkering, Nissan did not have a clue what was wrong - said that they needed an expert to have a look at it.
After an uncomfortably hot ride back to Pretoria yesterday the car was duly delivered to Nissan Menlyn's air conditioning expert. Naturally the solution could not be a simple one - the compressor was the problem: cost R5000. Then, a couple of hours later - "no sorry, the head of the air conditioning compressor is broken - the cost is now R15, 000 to fix it." Given that absolutely nothing out of the ordinary happened between the air conditioner working properly and it not working at all - in fact it probably took us several minutes to realise that it was not working any longer - I wonder how on earth something was able to "break" unless it is made of extremely suspect material.
We have had problems with the brakes previously but, with this rectified, I was seriously considering trading the old X-Trail in on a new 2014 model - NO LONGER!!!
