I unfortunately recommended that new Durbanites join us for dinner at Splashes expecting great ambiance and food. An embarrassing decision! On arrival we were confronted with a cheap prefab wall and cracked cement floors dividing the restaurant up. The largest area being a noisy Sports Bar. No-one welcomed us and after wandering around red-faced we were eventually assisted by a waiter - into the Sports Bar although we had booked for the restaurant. After complaining we were taken to the dining area. We were amazed to see that the designated smoking area for the Sports Bar was the verandah of the restaurant. The overwhelming smell of smoke (our table was right next to the smokers' tables) made us request another table. Our table was then carried into the Sports Bar area as smoking was not allowed there! Being late we did not want to go in search of another restaurant so we spent the evening (smoke free) shouting at each other about the noise of the revellers. The service and food were not of such a standard that we will ever frequent Splashes again. On our departure we passed the dining area which absolutely reeked of stale tobacco.
