We have been trying to exchange our money from SA Rands to UK GBP for nearly a month now. Pamela who assisted us has been very efficient - but FNB seems to have their own rules and change them to suit themselves. When I left SA I notified the bank that I would need to bring the money from the sale of my property out of South Africa - i was advised by FNB Clearwater that if I made my daughter (who is over 21) power of attorney there would be no problems as she could organise it and sign for everything. When it came to the transfer - there was now a different system in place - i had to courier signed documents to my daughter which delayed the transfer... once the documents were received they were submitted to the bank... 3 days later my daughter gets a call saying they cannot transfer the monies from Rands to Rands - we have an account in the UK which is an investment account that takes Rands and we will convert is to Pounds when we wish in the UK... FNB is now saying that they HAVE to convert it to Pounds -firstly i dont believe this is legally so - as a banking institution you can transfers the monies Rands to Rands (we have sought advice from the banks here in UK).. I believe this
