Incorrect balances at the ATM & Internet banking

Yesterday I withdrew a large sum of money from my bank account but before I did that I checked my available balance. After the withdrawal I had small positive balance. The following day I went to an ATM to deposit money however this time around I had a large negative balance.
I printed a statement and saw that many of the purchases made earlier in the month only came off the day after the withdrawal.
My problem is the fact that the ATM, Internet banking and SMS showed a balance that clearly was not available in my account. One expects that the amount shown is the amount available because otherwise what is the point of having an 'available balance'.
Due to this misrepresentation I now have an overdraft that I cannot afford to pay. If I had known I did not have that money available I would not have made purchases.
