Why did you cancel my policy without notifying me?

On 15 December I realised that my debit order for Santam didn't go off. I was on holiday. Yesterday was my first day back at the office and I phoned to enquire why it didn't go off. Then I was informed that my policy was cancelled?? Can you please give any good reason why that happened. What if something happened to my vehicle during the festive season. And now worst of all - you want to double debit me on 15 January in order to reinstate the vehicle insurance policy?
