I was contacted by absa bank for an telephonic application for a credit card, after which i was notified that my card is ready for collection. I was informed that i needed to provide proof of address in order to collect the card. I informed the operator that i do not have proof of physical address as all my post is received via post box at the post office! i never collected the card and soon received credit card statements which reflected monthly bank charges, and these charges have accumulated to a total of over R700 to date. After contacting absa, i was informed that the account can only be closed once the account reflects R0 and proof that the card has been destroyed has been received, which will be difficult to do as the card was NEVER collected by myself, and secondly i refuse to pay any fees accumulated for a credit card i never signed for or took ownership of! Absa bank should only be charging fees once a card has been collected and all agreements pertaining to the credit card with regards to limits and charges have been signed by the card owner.
