I have a credit card account (5221 0084 6111 451) with Standard Bank to which I make a small monthly payment (R292.54) in order to build up a bit of spare capital. As I never use this account for other purposes I was unaware that Standard Bank was debiting this account for two insurance products - an Accidental Death Policy Plan and a Hospital Plan - claiming that I subscribed to them via the phone. Although I did subscribe to the Accidental Death Plan, I was under the impression that the R138, 51 was coming out of my FNB account. Moreover, I did not apply for a Hospital Plan as I was already subscribed to a Medical Aid Plan with Discovery Health. I therefore had no need for a Hospital Plan.
I only became aware of an outstanding amount of R11 827.76 on this credit card when I received communication from Standard Bank in April 2013. Since that date I have unsuccessfully attempted to address this issue with various people at the bank and this amount has now accrued to over R12 000.
I would like have a personal interview with someone with the designated authority as email and phone conversations have not been successful and while the matter is unresolved the account is mounting
