Virgin's call centre rings me to thank me for being a great client and offer me a "gift". The call centre operator gives me a whole song-and-dance about how Virgin wants to thank me with a special offer on the most competitive life insurance cover in the market, exclusively launched by Virgin "last week". Intrigued, I agree to answer a few questions. First question: do I suffer from any chronic illnesses. Yes, I reply, I have allergy-based asthma. He puts me on hold for a moment, comes back and says "You don't qualify... Okay? Have a nice day" and hangs up!! So, what? Virgin doesn't want to thank me for being a great customer after all?! VIRGIN: that silly sales script and poorly trained salesman did more damage to your brand in 10 minutes than you can shake a stick at. You have one of the most likeable brands in the market and you're usually very competitive, don't go treating your customers like.
