Signed surety on a vehicle

Good day, please can someone assist me, as it seems like I am fighting a loose battle here. I was a director of
a company 2 years ago, which in my capacity as a director I signed surety for the purchase of a corsa utility. I resigned from the company as a Director in that period, signed documents that state I will not be held liable for any debt of the company, which I do have all the documentation with me. Mfc kept on phoning me for the arrears on the bakkie, which eventually led to them reposessing the bakkie. I am being held responcible for the money owed on the bakkie. I am willing to pay the arrears on the bakkie (but I have nothing preventing the company
to come and take the bakkie back from me. The bank says I must just pay, and there is no guarentee. Please can somebody advise me on what to do.
