I tried to complete a cross border payment to a hotel in Tanzania from the Rivonia branch. After completing an 8 page document I was then informed because I do not have an South African ID my transaction was declined. I went to the Melrose Arch branch to update my details with my ID book. I was informed by the teller that she had to send a photocopy to the home affairs to confirm validity of my ID. A process which may take up to 2 weeks. It has been 3 weeks and there has been no feedback. This morning I called to follow up to be informed that I can make a cross border payment with my passport details and that confirmation of my ID can occur at the branch because the bank is linked to home affairs. So what happened to the photocopy of my ID? I am appalled and embarrassed by the service I have received considering too that I am a platinum banker. My bill is still outstanding! Clearly the information dissemination is flawed. But I wont be so quick to assume foreigners are given the run around by the bank considering other complaints I have come across.
