Over the Top Bank Charges

I have a 32 day deposit account with Absa (for my business) which only gives 2.2% interest and you get no statements unless you explicitly told them you want them.

So this morning my bookkeepers said they need to know when certain amounts were deposited into the account but that they can't get statements back further than 3 months. I called in and the lady told me "Sure no problem so how far do you need statements back? " I say 12 months. She says "Ok, just be aware that it's going to cost you R32 PER MONTH".

So they offer to transfer me to Norma in the business department who confirms this cost, but adds "You should have received statements hence the cost". To which I respond "but I didn't get any". Norma then says "Yes but you had to ask that you get sent statements" Huh?

Please explain how we got here with Banking in South Africa where we now have to pay R384 for 12 month's worth of statements?
