Standard Bank
Money Withdrawn from Account without prior warning

Good day,
On the 26th of last month - June 2013 - R3000-00 was 'withdrawn' from my Standard Bank Savings account. After some inquiry, for no one at the bank could tell me what it was for, I was told that Standard Bank had taken the money out of my account for a (Edgars) Credit Card which was still unpaid from the year 2007.
The Credit Burea (on their website) tells me that this debt has been written off, but if I do still owe Standard Bank, I am more than willing to pay them back, but to suddenly after so many years - and without any warning - take R3000-00 out of my account, leaves me more than a little perplexed, never mind completely broke for the rest of the month.
My question is: is the bank allowed to simply do this without consulting its customers?
I spoke to someone over the phone (from the Randburg branch) from 'head office' and have made a commitment to repay the outstanding debt in monthly instalments. He gave me the account number and said I would have to do this manually every month as no stop order could be used in these situations. Is this also standard practice?
Many Thanks
Bruce
