Cell phone Insurance! Are You coved

I upgraded my cell to a Samsung s4 on 13/05/13 . I found the phone hard to use, due to the sf the phone.
On the 17/06/13 my husband John also upgraded his cell to a I phone 5 . We did all these upgrades threw Middleburg mall branch Ciska, store manger help with mine and Kim help with my husbands. My husband was kind enough to give me the new i5 and we decided to give our son the S4 . All three of these contracts are in our names. At the time of the I5 upgrade Kim WAS aware that
I would be using the i5 phone and that our Son would be using the s4 . At NO time were we informed that this phone would not be covered by insurance. At No time were we offered insurance on the other contacts. I know that I had insured the s4 on my upgrade in 13/05/13 . The S4 phone was this weekend at Dunkeld in Dullstoom at our other sons wedding.
Now we have been informed that the phone is not covered!! Because the insurance was on my number. The fore because my sim was not using the phone the insurance was void ..
You can imagine our shock!
I feel the this shop assistance was negligent in not informing us of the need for THEM!! to update info. Why would we pay for invalid insurance
