KLM online billing unreliable

My boyfriend and i purchased flights online (KLM website) with a "time to think" option. The very same day we paid for the flights with my card online. a booking confirmation with our confirmed flights were received via email. When arriving at the airport, we were told that the tickets did not exist and that the payment failed. After querying this with my bank, they sent me a formal letter proving that the funds were reserved for KLM however, KLM did not bank it in time. Due to the fact that KLM's billing system did not bank the funds reserved for the tickets by my bank, we lost the tickets and had to pay double price for new tickets. We did not get any booking cancellation, booking failure or anything stating this and had to arrive all ready to go at the airport a few months after the booking was made, only to find out that the tickets did not exist. We requested that they honor the original ticket prices since the error was on their side, but KLM refused and opted for a small voucher instead. All we want is for our original ticket price to be honored and not be treated unfairly by such a large "reputable" organisation.
