Surname spelling Issue

I booked a flight from Jhb to Ndola, Zambia, leaving the 28th February 2013. I did an online booking. When it asked to enter my surname, I typed L? tter (as it states in my ID book). I payed for the flight and when I received my Invoice I noticed my surname is spelled Loetter, I enquiered if this will be a problem when I check in and the Answer was Yes, I will not be allowed. Now I have to pay a cancellation fee and pay more for a ticket and this was not my mistake.
