Not debiting, then hand account over to attorney

Last year (Round about April 2012) I explained to the holiday club in no uncertain terms that I don't EVER want anything to do with THC ever again. This after deducting money of my account that they should not have been deducting. THC responded by saying that they will not debit me for the next couple of months as
I am in credit but they will then start debiting again later in the year. I told them to not bother starting up debit orders again but can then cancel my account when it comes to that point. I was happy to see that they could actually follow that simple instruction as they never debited me again. I did not receive any correspondence from them again till, Yesterday.--> An single sms informing me that my account is in arrears and that I should contact the attorneys.??? Is this the way THC gets money, Stop debiting there clients making them think that they have effectively cancelled there account just to give them over to attorneys at a later sage? So apparently I had to cancel my account in writing?? Question to The Holiday club: ... Why did you stop debiting me in the first place??
