Wrong data/Not enough info

I'm a conservative cell phone user, as my account history will show. Went overseas, came back to TWO HUGE CELL PHONE BILLS. To the point where I felt like running into the ocean. From their point of view, I used the data, I have to pay. From my point of view, I couldn't connect often enough to have run up such a huge account. We often tried to connect to get directions, and couldn't.
If I did use that amount of data, I have no idea how it happened. If it was the few times I was on Whatsapp, it is an abomination - nobody anywhere, ever told me to beware of this as it might be extremely costly. Nobody gave me any pointers before we left as to possible rates in European countries. I didn't get any code to activate roaming or deactivate it. The previous time I was overseas, my account hardly showed any difference.
The worst part of all this, while I'm trying to get behind all this and talking to AA, they started pilfering small amounts of money out of my account - R500 and R600 at a time, up to twice a day. To me that is tantamount to, as we didn't come to any agreement yet, they didn't ask me if they could deduct the money from my account, and the dispute is not settled yet.
