Illed for an extra month after contract end

My contract's expiry date was August. I phoned on 20/8/13 to cancel, and was informed that their rules state I must give a month notice. So I figured that means they will charge me for September even though I'm not using phone and I was fine with that, but when I received my bill they charged me for Sept and October.
