Approved contract with incorrect reference numbe

I applied for a vodacom contract with the Vodacom 4U Branch situated at Liberty Mall in Pietermaritzburg.
I gave them all documents that were required. I got a phone call after a day or two from Haccina saying that my contract has been approved and she asked me what colour Blackberry i wanted. I said i wanted the pink one. She told me that she will keep it for me. I went to the branch on Friday the 30 August 2013 to collect the phone and sign where i needed to. The sales lady (Haccina) told me that they have had problems with the pink Blackberry so i took the white. Firstly it was faulty, trackpad didnt work, so i took it back, got another one which she tested and it worked. I got back to my office and not long after that, i got a call from Haccina again saying that theres bad news and that the reference that was given to approve my contract was actually someone elses reference and that they needed the phone back. I was going to take it back the next day, but she said she needed the phone on that day to sell it. I landed up cancelling the contract due to being messed around. How can such a mistake be made?
