Do they even want to retain customers?

The problem with my renewal is I am moving my contract from RBM to CellC direct. Ok, I did expect some difficulties. I chose my phone (Siii Mini on Straight Up 200). NO STOCK. Your FB group can't say when stock will be in, neither the waterfront or canal walk store can confirm so I have been waiting.
I decided to at least get the new contract under way as stock is allocated in preference to newly running contracts are put on a waiting list for the phone (according to the cellC direct call centre call 20/6). Waterfront shop (29/6) said you can't renew the contract without having the new phone in hand. Canalwalk (30/6) said you can't renew unless you cancel the old RBM contract, wait 20 business days then start a new contract and port your number. CellC Direct (30/6) said you can start the new contract today, but my existing number would be cancelled for 7 days while the port happened.
Now its a new month. This morning retentions confirmed cancellation and switch to prepaid is immediate then you can port to your new contract so there's no 7 DAYS WITHOUT AN ACTIVE NUMBER!
If I had know that I would have completed the transaction yesterday and forgone the now extra month wait!
