Unfair treatment

In the beginning of July i contacted Virgin Active call center, advising them that i need to cancel my contract due to financial difficulties as i can no longer be able to pay them, and as a result of that i had stopped going to the gym somewhere in March 2013, after that i heard nothing from them, to my suprise they were still billing me as i got a letter threatning me to say i must pay an amount of R1634.00 in (7) days time or legal actions will be taken against me. Firstly i had stopped going to the gym i even called to inform them of my situation, i dont owe them anything as i never took anything from them, i was paying for their gyming equipment which i used when i went there, so now i dont understand why am i being billed for not going to the gym.
