I joined Planet Fitness in Parklands, Cape Town, South Africa, on the 1st of January 2025, after meeting the sales manager, Mr. Frank, in late December 2024. He mentioned that I would only be paying a monthly fee of R299 and that all other prorated fees would be waived. He also stated that I would only have to pay R150 and a R100 registration fee, which I paid in December 2024, totaling R250.
In January 2025, when I wanted to use the gym for the first time, I was blocked and told that there was an outstanding fee that had not been paid. I informed them that my monthly fee had been paid and was deducted from my account. They claimed they did not have the money in their account.
I then contacted the sales manager who signed me up to resolve the matter. He said he would look into it and took almost the entire month to resolve it. I had to go to the bank to bring statements showing the money was deducted, while Planet Fitness insisted it was not. I never used the gym in January 2025 as the matter was not resolved.
Then, in February 2025, the same issue arose when I tried to go to the gym. They said the problem with the sales department had to be resolved on my account, and I now owed R790. I asked Frank to resolve the issues and get back to me, and I never used the gym in February.
At the end of February, as Frank had not resolved my issue despite several attempts to ask him to resolve my account, I asked to see a manager. He tried to resolve the problem and said that it was not my fault; it was their head office that had not actioned and deducted the prorated fee as per the agreement. I had to pay R423, which I then paid.
I was very fed up with this club and chose to cancel my contract as I have not used the club since the beginning of 2025. Now they want to charge me for four months as a cancellation fee (R1190), whereas I have not even been allowed to use the gym since joining in January 2025.
Please advise whom I can contact to take this matter further, as I am not going to pay the cancellation fee since I have NOT been allowed to use the gym.
I have all the WhatsApp messages and emails sent to the club manager and sales team since January 2025, and none of them have helped me since I was blocked from the gym.
