Ster-Kinekor
Ster Kinekor discriminates against Opera lovers

I wish to complain about the times of showing for the current Metropolitan Opera series. In previous years there have been daily screenings, at least three of which have been outside working hours, commencing at 7.30pm. In the current season there are much fewer screenings, only one of which is at 5pm, and all others are at either 11.30 in the morning or 2.30 in the afternoon. The nett effect of this is that the bulk of the screenings are at times which can only suit retired people or those on holiday or leave. Anyone who actually works has the greatest difficulty in getting to view these cultural gems. I find this counterproductive, especially as the screenings are apparently sponsored by Bloomberg. I may also note that while all those I have managed to attend are virtually booked out, Ster Kinekor seems quite happy to screen indifferent movies up to 5 times a day regardless of the audience volume. For example, a recent showing of Bel Ami which I attended at a peak time on Friday night had 7 people in the cinema. Overall the decision by Ster to cut the availablility of this high quality production series is inexplicable on all fronts other than ignorance
