I responded to an ad for rental property posted by Brett Eastwood of BrightHouse Real Estate on Gumtree. We viewed the unit, signed the lease agreement and paid the deposit and other costs totalling R20650 to his personal account. We were then informed that the unit had already been let by another agent. I informed Brett that I'd wanted a full refund of my money as we would need to secure alternate accommodation. Two weeks later and I've not received a cent from him. The Estate Agency Affairs Board and the Gauteng Rental Housing Tribunal have both confirmed that Brett is not a licenced estate agent and is trading illegally in that sector. His actions are nothing short of, misrepresentation and. We have tried contacting him several times but only receive excuses that the money isn't with him but with another agent or the owner of said unit. No proof of this has been provided. He is extremely dishonest and deceitful. He remains unapologetic, showing no remorse or regret. It is blatantly evident that the money is with him and he still refuses to pay us back. He also tried to take advantage of our desperate situation by trying to convince to take another sub-standard unit.
