BULLYING US INTO COMPLIANCE

I use the newly-tolled roads, sometimes as a passenger in somone else's car, sometimes in my own. I chose not to buy an e-tag and not to register, as I object to the entire process. Seven days into the e-tolling, when I had not yet received an account, I went into the Sanral website to get what I owe and pay wthin the 7 days allotted. However, i found it is impossible to get any information unless you register an account - which I refuse to do. Then the threatening SMSs started. I called the customer service division (who were very helpful and polite) and asked them to let me have a transaction list so I can see when I went through the gantries and how much it costs etc (their system is so convoluted, it is impossible to figure out how much you should be paying). They sent me an invoice for R500 - no breakdown. I then sent them a mail telling them I am not prepared to pay on what THEY say I owe - so we have reached a stalemate. In their eyes, I am now a criminal to be persecuted and I feel they are deliberately making it impossible to manage one's own e-toll account, thereby forcing us to buy an e-tag # easy money in their pockets.
