Two days ago the SA Post Office International Deliveries Division delivered a very precious and very fragile parcel to my home. As the sender had not supplied my contact number, they had been unable to advise me ahead of time of the amount payable in customs duty and I didn't have the amount ready. The very courteous driver/courier explained that he meet me at the nearest post office, where he would hand over the parcel and where I could then pay by card or draw the cash from the nearest ATM. He went out of his way to ensure that the parcel was safely delivered in to my hands and I am genuinely sorry that I did not ask for his name so as to thank him by name in this forum.
What a contrast to my experience with a private courier company! Privatisation does not always result in more efficient or cheaper service.
