I have received several SMS's on my cellphone (which is a business cellphone registered in the name of the company I work for, by the way) as follows: "Your TV Lic a/c 419218334 has been handed over to VVM DEBT COLLECTORS. Contact us urgently to make a payment arrangement. Tel: 0877401214." I spoke to Mr Voster Baloi today, who informed me that the License, taken out in 2000, is in arrears to an amount of about R5500, and is in fact in the name of my wife (they have her maiden name on record). She has NEVER OWNED a television - she lived with relatives while at school, in hostels while studying and then with me when we married (our only TV set in the home is in my name, as is the TV license, with a totally different account/license number, and which is current and paid up, I might add!). And it follows that, having never owned a TV, she has never applied for a license, so where does this debt come from? Mr Voster Baloi at VVM informed me that they could only provide me with an account statement - no documentation, no contract, no application form, nothing. Is this a or some sort of illegal activity? Would greatly appreciate some investigations from your side!
