Cruise liner MSC Opera turns back halfway

My wife and I booked balcony cabin for a 5 day sea cruise on MSC Opera through Groupon from Monday 4Feb 2013 to 8 Feb 2013. The itinerary was from Durban to Portuguese Island and thereafter to Barra Lodge, Inhambane.
At Portuguese Island the ship remained anchored for 2 full days and 1 night. This was due to unsafe beaching conditions on Tuesday, which we fully appreciate.
On Wednesday passengers were sent ashore to Portuguese Island. HOWEVER, THE SHIP DID NOT CONTINUE ONWARDS TO ITS FINAL DESTINATION TO BARRA LODGE, BUT INSTEAD that evening the ship started to return to Durban, Most of the passengers I spoke to were totally confused and were under the assumption that we were going onward to Barra Lodge. At no stage were we properly informed of the change of itinerary.
We did not receive what we paid for because Durban to Portuguese Island and back is a totally different itinerary at a totally different price.
I strongly feel that we should be compensated for the shortened cruise. I have gone on a similar cruise where we could not beach at Barra Lodge but the ship did not alter its itinerary.
