We recently applied for medical aid with Bonitas for our son who has just turned 21 but is still a student. We were told by the broker to be honest about anything he had been in hospital for in the last 5 years. At high school he broke his collar bone playing rugby and a few weeks ago there was an accident with a sharp knife (he's a chef) and he got cut on the back just below the shoulder blade. On Tuesday I was told that he must be cancelled off the current medical aid before he could be put onto their scheme. I explained that we couldn't do that until we knew we had cover so today I got a letter with a 3 mth general exclusion period, no claims at all in that time but they would happily collect the R1558 per month from us, and a 1yr exclusion on anything related to the shoulder, arm, abdomen, lower back & pelvis!! Why didn't they just add "any body part whatsoever"!! He has been on our medical aid for 20 years, this is not his first medical aid and apart from the cut, they can verify that he has been very healthy for the last 4 years since the collar bone. The.broker said that Bonitas was not the biggest medical aid and this is the reason why they never will be. Shysters
