I am a healthy 31 year old female that pays approx R1690.00 towards Discovery every month. I need to take my wisdom teeth out as they are causing extreme pain and swelling. I have just been informed by Discovery that I need to make a co-payment of either R2400.00 (for day clinic care) or R3650.00 (for in hospital treatment) before being booked in.
When querying this at the complaints department the Manager explained to me that they are a health insurance company and if I am in a car accident tomorrow I will be insured, however for Dental treatment I will need to pay the co-payment. This is ludicrous! I replied that I understand that Discovery is a medical insurance company and that I need to take my wisdom teeth out as it is a medical issue. After arguing with me I asked if I could cancel my medical aid. Jean was more than happy to do this for me. No attempt to selvage the relationship was made.
I feel that Discovery is more than happy to take your money however when there is a medical issue, not very willing to help.
