I was diagnosed with a blood-mutation called "Factor V-Leiden". This makes my blood clot, and causes dvt, pulmonary embolism - and if not treated, death.
Well - I was diagnosed with a DVT during my first pregnancy, and was put on warfarin, been on it since 1 Feb 2010. I have my INR monitored through the Lancet PI Dosage Clinic. I really go out of my way to live healthy, and make the right choices in everything I do - just to stay alive.
Now - in order for my to fall pregnant again - I HAVE TO be on Clexane throughout my pregnancy - to ensure I dont clot, and die while pregnant.
I went to a Hemotologist, and did the necessary blood tests - all results came back, and the FVL is confirmed. Her office then sent through the request for Discovery to pay the clexane through our Chronic Ilness Benefit, for the duration of my pregnancy (as I will go back onto Warfarin, directly after delivery).
To no surprise - Discovery has REJECTED this. No surprise there - as Discovery is only more than happy to take THOUSANDS of OUR rands every month, to pay for a Medical Aid (Top Plan) - but when it comes to paying for medicine we need as a matter of life and death - all they say is, REJECTED!
