Hello
I would like to make the wits institution aware of an incident because of a fear of victimisation.
I attended lectures in wits medical school last week. A fellow student and I were the first to arrive at the lecture venue where we were late by 2 minutes. The lecturer was already at the venue. We were met by shouts and screams at why we were late and we should never keep this lecturer in question waiting or we would have to do the lecture independant study. The fellow student with me apologised but that only made things worse. It didnot end there as the rest of the group arrived there was even more complaining of late coming and singling out of one student to look up and the lecturer asked one of the students if chewing gum was common in lectures as it was distracting to the lecturer. The student responded that the gum helps with alertness in lectures. The lecture continued with the student still chewing but without incident. Needless to say the lectures attitude did improve on the next day the lecturer lectured to us. But because I fear victamisation because of this incident I would rather voice it out early. It is known that wits can make things unbearable for students if they wish
